In a post shared online, the cleric claimed that, based on reports he has received, no European priest has ever refused to baptize someone using an African name. According to him, such rejections have only come from African priests.
He wrote:
"From all the reports I have received in recent times, no European priest has ever rejected the use of an African name for baptism. All the rejections so far have come from our own native priests.
"That brings me to the question: who taught us to hate ourselves?"
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with many social media users debating the place of indigenous names in Christian baptism and whether African cultural identity should be embraced within the Church.
